Gurmeet S. Kanwal, M.D.

Gurmeet S. Kanwal, M.D., is Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, and Supervising Psychoanalyst and Teaching Faculty at the William Alanson White Institute in New York City. He is Past-President of the William Alanson White Psychoanalytic Society and Editorial Board Member and Fellow of the College of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis.

Dr. Kanwal is co-editor, with Dr. Salman Akhtar, of “Bereavement- Personal Experiences and Clinical Reflections”, (Karnac, 2017), and “Intimacy: Clinical, Cultural, Digital and Developmental Perspectives” (Routledge, 2018) (Nominated for the 2019 Gradiva Award) in which he also has a chapter titled, “Friendship, Friendliness and Intimacy”. His papers have been published in Contemporary Psychoanalysis, NeuroPsychoanalysis, Psychoanalytic Review, Psychoanalysis, Culture and Society, Psychoanalytic Perspective and Journal of Infant, Child, and Adolescent Psychotherapy. His most recent paper, titled, Integrative Individuation: An alternative to the Separation-Individuation model will be appearing in the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association.

 

Dr. Kanwal is a three-time recipient of the Cornell Psychiatry Residents’ Teacher of the Year Award. In addition to teaching in the U.S., he has lectured on psychoanalysis in India. He is on the Program Committee of Division 39 of APA and the Technology and Global Learning Committee of the William Alanson White Institute.

 

His current clinical and scholarly interests are focused on: culture, trauma, immigration, identity, racism, and intersectionality.

 

Dr. Kanwal is in full-time Private Practice in New York City.
